Muna - June 2013 - BellaNaija (6)For former beauty queens, there is often the challenge of remaining relevant and sustaining the glitz and glamour of their positions, or otherwise, vanishing into oblivion immediately after their reign. Munachi Abii, better known as Muna, had a remarkable reign as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in 2007. However, shortly after the pageant, it was clear that it was just a platform to a successful career she would have still had with or without the pageant.
Born and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Muna was encouraged by her family to pursue her passion for Music and Arts while studying International Relations and Diplomacy at the Benson Idahosa University.
With some hit singles such as “Killer Queen”, “Down Down Low” and “No Tomorrow”, she has warmed her way into the hearts of many fans.
Also a model and TV Host, Muna took a break off Music a while ago but is now back and revamped. At her new manager’s photography studio in Opebi, Ikeja, Muna was a warm and bubbly host as she opened up on her life, her music career and more.

Most Nigerians got to know you after you won the MBGN pageant in 2007. But we understand Music started for you way before that. When did you have your first major platform?
A rap group called Specimen A gave me my first shot to be on a track. I was a rapper way before I won MBGN back in 2007 and I’ve been rapping ever since. I stopped for a bit but now, I’m back.

Were they your first influence to do music?
I’m from a musical family. Most of my cousins are actually in music industry. The older generation used to be into music so it just passed down. I have a cousin named Pamela who is into music and another one in the states whose music is talking over Atlanta and Houston right now. A lot of my cousins are into music and at least 4 or 5 of my first cousins are doing really well. It’s a creative family.

Some music artistes see tattoos as a form of expression. Have you ever thought of getting one?
Back in secondary school, I always loved body art because it attracted attention. You know, people just thought you were weird. But right now, it’s just too common. Either way, I don’t fancy staining my skin anymore.

432571_munachi_2_jpgb994303d8b6e25d7806fd1bdb47d3ae4

Having been in the music industry for some years, many would think you should have a personal website by now. Is this in the works?.
It’s still under construction. It’s called ‘Muna’s World’. A lot of things that I’m doing now will go up on the website once it’s done. It’s going to have my profile and just every single thing I’m doing. All my projects are going to be there – music, entertainment, just hanging with my friends and more. I’m going to make it an interactive platform so my fans can talk to me one on one.

We also heard you’re working on something with Sarah Ofili and eLDee. What is this about?
I can’t let it out now but Sarah, eLDee and I are working on a project. It’s kind of like a very crazy radio show and it’s off the hook. Right now, we’ve been recording.

Is it strictly radio?
Yeah but it’s going to be syndicated hopefully and it will be huge.

On your newest single, “No Tomorrow”, we noticed you did a lot more singing than rapping. Are you trying to be more commercial or are you just experimenting with more Electronic Dance and Pop music?
I’ve always done Dance/Pop. My first ever single “I Feel Real” was kind of Dance/Pop but I don’t think the world was ready for that then. Sometimes you need to go back and re-evaluate yourself and come out again so that’s what happened. I just did what I knew how to do best and that’s keep it simple. We really don’t need all those complexities right now. I just want to have fun. I’m sure you want to have fun too so that was the whole idea.

MunaRedDressBellaNaija

Your new song and Tomi Thomas’ (of L.O.S) new single have a similar Dance Pop vibe, did you use the same producer?
That’s a great song by the way but no, mine was actually produced by DJ Klem. I just think that’s the new era of music now. I think everybody is going to change. If you notice DRB Lasgidi did something like that with “Selecta” which is a beautiful song too. I think that’s what music here is going to turn into very soon. We’re just hitting the Electronice Dance music phase now or we’ve been there since.

What’s your relationship like with L.O.S?
Those boys are cool. Those boys are my brothers.

When the news of your altercation with Mode Nine hit the Nigerian online community, you were in Dubai and you tend to always be there now and then. What is Dubai to you?
Dubai is like my second home. I can be myself there. There’s no celebrity spotlight on me and  I’m just a regular person; that’s what I love. Sometimes you just want to get away and just be yourself. So, when I’m there, I can write better; I can think better, I can do everything I want to do. So, that’s my getaway… at least until they find it. (laughs)

Some of the L.O.S boys go to school in Dubai and, from the grapevine, we’ve heard that you were dating one of them – Briss. How true is this?
That’s ridiculous. I mean people that know me, and know who I’m dating, know that that is just a bogus and very ridiculous story.

So, don’t you want to let them know who you’re dating?
No. The people that know, know and it’s not like I’m hiding who I’m dating, it’s just that I’m very private about my relationship. If you know, it’s all well and good. If you don’t, it’s still all well and good.

What do you like the most about your boyfriend?
My boyfriend is funny. That’s not all but for now, I’ll say he’s very funny.

Muna - June 2013 - BellaNaija (2)

What do you find attractive about a man?
I find it hot when a guy wears Tom Ford cologne, dresses good, looks good and doesn’t sag his pants. I like a true gentleman.

In that case, do you have any celebrity crushes?
Robert Downey Jr.

In the kitchen, would you say you’re a good cook? What are your specialties?
Definitely, I’m a good cook. Everything I cook is good. I make a mean Oha soup.

So back to your Mode Nine altercation, has that hindered any progress in your career? Has it affected your corporate image, for example?
No, it didn’t do anything to me. It’s just that the whole experience taught me that there’s a lot of learning that needs to go on between individuals. First of all, temper and tantrums – everyone needs to learn to control their temper, myself and Mode Nine included. Secondly, friendship and respect is important. I have respect for Mode Nine and he has respect for me. I think the whole thing was blown out of proportion by the media and it wasn’t like that at all.

Since that is all cleared up, will we see you as the MC of an event anytime soon?
I’m focusing on my music right now. I just brought out this song and I’m still promoting it. I need to stay focused on it and I’m having a good time so that’s what is key to me right now. But, if I’m going to host any gig, I’m going to make sure that everybody gets the memo that I’m getting so that there’s no misunderstanding about anything. We wouldn’t want a repeat of something like that to happen again.

Sometime last year, you were in the states and the UK working on your album. We also spotted you in photos with the likes of Usher and Ludacris. How did that come about? Was it because of the BET cypher? Did that open up doors?
Well, if it were in the States, I guess it would have but here it was just a cypher for people to say who was good and who wasn’t. It didn’t really take off anything. But, it was very good exposure and I’m happy for it. It helped as PR.

Munachi & Usher Raymond

So, when you meet them – fan moment, friend moment or just business?
Back when I was much younger, not that I’m old now (laughs), I used to love Ludacris. When I would write my name, I used to write Muna Bridges (Ludacris’ real name is Christopher Bridges). It was crazy like that. So, you know when you get older, things change because when I finally met Ludacris, it was like – “is this the guy I’ve been crushing on?” Dreams do come true but I wasn’t in love like I was before. I still love him though but he’s got a girl (laughs).

I’ll take that as a huge fan moment then. Is that relationship still intact? Will we be hearing a collaboration with him anytime soon?
You never know. I can’t say anything about that right now.

When will we be getting your debut album? Is it still called “The Goddess, The Hustler”?
The name may most likely change. I have to give a  name that people can relate to. I haven’t quite figured that out yet. We’ve been working. Everything so far for me has been a learning process and we still have all those records in the vault and they’re still good so they will be on the album. We’ll redo a few tracks but “Killer Queen” will be on the album. You should be expecting the album around December this year. I just dropped a single and next is a video. We have a lot of things to do before then but it just has to come out this year. This year is like the females year with Omawumi, Waje and Tiwa Savage all dropping albums.

Do you think you’re going to dominate them with yours?
Everybody is a big star in their own right and I think the sky is big enough for all of us so it’s cool.

Waje and Muna on stage

Are you and Waje still very close?
Of course! Of course!

How did you feel when you found out “So Inspired” didn’t make the cut for her debut album?
No, no, no, I was okay with that because “So Inspired” was done so long ago but “I Wish” is on the album which is good for me because I co-wrote that. That made me feel good.

You have a new Manager who is also a professional photographer – Paul Ukonu. Does that mean you’ve split with Ayo Shonaiya and his RMG Record label?
RMG and I still work together in certain  things. We’re still family off the business so there’s no real separation. We’re all one huge polygamous family. Ayo Shonaiya still works with me on my businesses, he still negotiates for me, which is part of the [music] business. Paul is my new manager and business partner so everyone is working hand in hand to make sure that this brand, Muna, goes very far. We’re all together.

It seems like endorsement season for some of our biggest acts. How about your Lux soap endorsement? Will we be seeing adverts anytime soon? Is that deal still intact?
(Laughs) We’re keeping our eyes open. It’s been over a year since I did that so my contract is still being reviewed for a renewal. You  never know, I might just pick it up again. As for endorsements, right now, I’ve got Dabur toothpaste. Do you use Dabur? You should. It’s really good. So, you better use Dabur.

Munachi Abii LUX - May 2011 - BellaNaija Exclusive 005

Do you have your eyes set on any endorsement deal?
I want everything. Why not? Anyone that comes, we will holla.

Where do you see yourself this time next year?
I hope to be making a whole lot of money. Just keep making money always.

Tell us a little something about your relationship with Terry G. Didn’t you say you had a crush on him once?
I never said that. I don’t know how that got out. I was on Twitter and I said ‘OMG if I catch Usher’ and then, people said – “Muna and Usher” and then soon, it was “Muna and Chris Brown”. You know, it’s crazy like that. Apparently, I have to watch what I say because everything I say is used against me. Literally, I think I saw a video of Terry G and he wasn’t wearing any shirt. So, I Tweeted “Wow! Look at those abs” and that was it. I’ve never met Terry G in my life. It was just a bogus rumour.

Let’s go back again. What was life like for you before all the fame? Tell us some fond memories from then.
In secondary school, Usher was performing at the Star Quest. You’ll say ‘Usher again’ (Laughs). Usher was performing in Port Harcourt for the first time so I had to beg my Mum to go to the show. I told her my friend Christian was going to take me. Back then, I had a crew and we all said we were going to go. So the boarding house students climbed the fence and we got into trouble because we seemed like instigators. And then, at the show again, a riot started so we had to climb under the fence to get out. But, in the end, it was so much fun.

Muna - June 2013 - BellaNaija (3)

How about University?
Hmm… starting up the Rap community in my school was pretty cool. I went to Benson Idahosa University. I was just a 100 level student, just before MBGN and my school was a very Christian school so if you were rapping, you had to be very careful, and you wouldn’t want to start a crew. I was able to get people from final year to first year to meet in one room because of Rap. I actually can’t believe I did that but I did. We were cool Hip-Hop people and we were not afraid. We didn’t get into any trouble because we were all straight-A students. Also, during NYSC, they didn’t know I was a beauty queen so they asked me to come and do Miss NYSC (laughs). Then, some people used say I was forming because I had won for Nigeria and didn’t want to compete in NYSC. My camp friends used to call me ‘Mama’.

So, how is life now, after the fame?
When I first won MBGN, people would ask and I would say that I haven’t changed. But looking back now, I guess people change because they start to say – “You’re now Hollywood. You’re now a celebrity”. It kind of makes me upset sometimes because if you have my number, call me. You see me, you know where I am, come and see me or vice versa. But if I come to see you and you’re feeling insecure, saying “What is she doing here?” Can’t I just be me, you know? So, I’ll say other people make it hard sometimes for you to be yourself but at the end of the day, you’re still yourself. Fame hasn’t really changed me. But now that we’re here, I would rather be a regular person than a famous one. I want the money (laughs) but I’m up for that behind-the-scenes money over the fame money. There’s too much drama involved.

It was great chatting with Muna and from BellaNaija, we wish her the very best!

Abisola Alawode: 11 Nigerian Alternative Musicians You Should Look Out For

$
0
0

FalanaAway from the usual applause that greets our more popular genres of music (i.e. Afro beat, Afro pop and even Fuji), the Nigerian Alternative sound has slowly begun forging a path for itself in recent times.

Nneka was the pacesetter, Asa has attained legendary status; Brymo is still Brymo, distinct as ever and Bez is in a class of his own. These are just a few of the alternative superstars we have presently.

However, there are a few other acts who are also aiming for superstar status. (I see you Temi Dollface and Bemyoda) If they would reach the heights attained by some of the names mentioned earlier depends on a couple of factors. (I’ll be listing them in a follow up article to this).

The tag ‘Alternative’ as regards the Nigerian sound is a source of debate from music lovers and critics alike. Some are of the opinion that any genre outside the more popular sounds mentioned above are to be considered alternative while others feel songs that are distinct in their use of live instruments should be considered as alternative songs.

Urban dictionary defines “Alternative music as a vast music genre that can be similar to pop music, or completely different.”

I call the artistes mentioned in this list alternative not because of their individual genres, alternative because they bring something different to the table.

This said, here are 11 Nigerian alternative acts you should look out for – in no particular order.

1) Yela
A banker by day and musician the rest of the time, Yela describes himself as an Afrocentric R&B artiste. He released his debut EP ‘Gidi + the Undertow’ early this year and hasn’t looked back since. Songs that stand out on the EP for me are ‘Boxes, Unpopular, Dance Wiv Me and Johni Walka.

2) Kaline
I remember seeing a video of Kaline playing the keyboard and I was so blown away that I had to go find out more about her. I didn’t even know she was Nigerian!  Apparently, she is a singer-songwriter and pianist who has a BMus in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music. Talk about talent. Anyway, listen to her single ‘Tell You of My Love’  to understand my thoughts about her. Meanwhile anyone notice the Solange Knowles type vibe she has?

3) Ayo Awosika
If you haven’t heard any of Ayo Awosika’s music, I forgive you.  I admit to being a stalker of this woman and her music ever since I heard of her last year. A singer – songwriter, music director and music teacher based in New York, she recently released her debut album ‘We Best Not Wait’  Ayo’s performance at the Lagos Jazz Series back in 2014 still stands out for me.

4) Falana
The energy Falana exudes when she performs is simply out of this world. And when she plays the box drum? Fire! Please anytime you hear she is putting together her pop up concert series, make sure you attend. Watch her ingenious cover of Fela’s ‘Lady’ HERE,

5) Ranti
In the first 10 seconds of me watching Ranti’s ‘Iwe Kiko’ video, I remember thinking “Great! Here’s another Asa wannabe” but immediately the EDM type vibe kicked in, that thought went out of the window! Ranti’s new school folk singer style is working for her so far. Iwe Kiko was just the beginning. Her second single Bamiwo is even better.

6) Lindsey Abudei
My ‘romance’ with Lindsey Abudei started when I downloaded her EP ‘Brown’ sometime in 2014. Since then, I still play it regularly. It rarely happens but I LOVED every song on that EP. Now Lindsey has released a full length album ‘And the Bass Is Queen’ best believe this album is fire. In fact, it is yet to get a negative review from critics since its release. Well done Lindsey, well done.

7) Johnny Drille
If you think Mr Drille sounds like OwlCity, you are forgiven until I heard him speak pidgin in his hit single Wait For Me. This Project Fame alumni has continued to soar since Wait for Me. I ‘can’t wait for him’ to release an EP or album.

8) Mosa
This man singlehandedly produced over 90% of TY Bello’s debut album Greenland and ever since then, everything he has touched has turned to gold in my opinion. He made the switch to singing a few years ago and he has put out songs I consider to be collector’s items. Doubt me? Check them out yourself I Love You and the more recent Femi.

9) MNEK
I initially had doubts about including MNEK on this list primarily because even though he is of Nigerian heritage (he was born Uzoechi Emenike in London) he is more popular abroad. Only 21, the list of people this dude has worked with is astounding. From Beyoncé to Madonna and Diplo, the list keeps growing. His cover of Vanesa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles will remain on my playlist for a long time. His chart topping single with Zara Larsson ‘Never Forget You’ has brought him worldwide recognition.

10) Tomi Thomas
Most people recognise Tomi as part of boy band L.O.S, but it seems as his hair grew out, he found his path as a musician. I particularly like the chemistry he has with his producer Benie Macaulay. He released his EP Black Couch Vol 1 recently. For me, his song Ready or Not is gold!

11) Aramide
What I admire about Aramide is the professionalism with which her career is being handled. I happen to be on her mailing list anytime she has new music or a video to put out. The way the press release is drafted and its accompanying photos always impress me. Think I’m wrong? Run a Google image search for Aramide and you’ll get a lot of hi-res photos of this delectable singer. Have you seen her website too? *claps* Listen to her recent quirky single (with Sir Dauda) ‘Funmilowo Mi’ and you wouldn’t be sorry.

Which new alternative act did I miss? Please drop a name in the comments section.

BudX treats Music Lovers to a Unique Party Experience in Abuja

Last Saturday, October 20th, music lovers and beer lovers in Abuja experienced BudX, an electronic music lab which brings artists, producers, DJs and fans together in one awesome brand experience. The venue, Harrow Park, was turned into a music venue that could have been well placed in Europe, not just because of the vibe or the cool young fans, excited to hear from some of the best producers within the space – but because the event was able to bring a uniqueness and authenticity not seen before.

The event, which served as a stage to underground DJs/ producers, hosted panel discussions and talks and offered insightful masterclasses by established artists for budding talent, was held across two spaces: The Main Room and Break Out Room.

The passage leading to these rooms served as the hangout zone, complete with a Budweiser bar to refresh the revellers and a colouring wall titled ‘This House is Not for Sale’. Another smaller room provided a cool feel and engagement elements such as the panoramic style televisions and illusion walls.

The BUDx store located next to the main room was stocked with limited edition T-shirts designed by Tomi Thomas in collaboration with uber trendy streetwear outlet, Garm Spot.

Themed, Electronic Africa: “This House is Not for Sale”, driven by the passion and the spirit of music. The event kicked off with a masterclass titled ‘House Music defined’ by Christian Rich, the American-born Nigerian Grammy-nominated production and DJ duo consisting of twins Taiwo and Kehinde Hassan who have produced for everyone from Drake to Childish Gambino.  The duo brought their knowledge of the history of house music from the underground clubs of Chicago to its evolution to Berlin – sharing their knowledge of this genre of music.

Next up was the workshop titled ‘House Music Production 101’ by hit-making producer, Sarz, who has produced for everyone including Wizkid to Wande Coal and Reminisce. At the music workshop, Sarz took the audience through his personal production process where he also shared some unreleased beats.

Another insightful discussion at BUDx was the panel titled ‘Understanding the Market and How to Monetize’ with Sarz, Ikon, DJ TTB and Sensei Lo. In a country where the music scene is growing, a lot can be learned from the successes of challenges of its trailblazers.

Budweiser Brand Manager, Franscoe Bouwer, stated: “BUDx is an electronic music lab, the first of its kind, which showcases emerging talent from the region as well as introducing a series of panels, masterclasses, seminars and interactive installations which gets behind the scene in emerging markets around the globe.” Bouwer adds “Budweiser is the King of Beers that inspires socialization and fun.”

The final master class of the day titled ‘Future of Africa House Music’ was taken by Ikon, a visionary music producer and rapper who has delivered a blueprint for creating Nigerian music.

Following the great learning experiences, guests stayed back for a super epic after party where they witnessed engaging sets – think underground room style with a lineup of some of the hottest DJs such as Aye, Sensei Lo, DJ Crown, DJ Aldeen The Sygerian, DJ Smooth and performances from Tomi Thomas and Pretty Boy D-O.

If BUDx aimed to provide a space for Nigeria’s growing electronic music scene to engage with each other in a relaxed setting, free-flowing Buds, Grills and an awesome party – it did just that!

Muna‘s back with not one but two scorching new singles to whet our appetite and remind us that though she’s been on a short hiatus grinding out on some other projects, she’s still holding her own in the rap game in Nigeria. The RMG Records ensign presents us with her alter egos, Tha Goddess and Tha Hustler.

“Here To Stay” is a low tempo laid back track where the Rapper goes extra hard waxing lyrical and proving she’s here to stay. It also features I.B.K (Spaceship Boi) and the combination makes for a good musical batch.

While “Down Down Low” features Tomi Thomas and the pair create magic on this more uptempo dance track that will get in the mood for the groove. Enjoy!

Thank God It’s Friday! It’s Onos O here and welcome to this week’s edition of BN Music Friday Top 5.

This week’s edition is dedicated to the best Nigerian collaborations making tsunamis and tidal waves this year, so we decided to put a little twist on our usual format and make this week’s edition more of a “collaborative” one. Give me a sec, let me explain further.

This week, I’m not going to force MY top 5 down your throat and make you just… “accept” it, so to say, like we usually do. This week, we want to hear your side of the story; we want you to share your own top 5 with us and tell us the reasons why. BUT, there’s also a little twist on that bit – we’re going to give you the songs to select from, a list of 21 songs. (Why 21? Well, we got 20 sure JAMS… then, remembered one that had to be on there so…)

So, simply put, on this week’s BN Music Friday Top 5, I’ll pick my own top 5 from the list of 21 songs and ask that you too share yours with us as well. And, just like last week, we’ve got a special video for you, at the end.

* * * * *

Now, here’s Onos O‘s BN Music Friday Top 5 (and don’t hesitate to scroll up to play any of the songs):

5. Yung 6ix Feat. Naeto C – Picking Things

“Picking Things” is like one of my anthems right now. It oozes swag and this free chilled out youthful spirit that I can easily vibe to. And, with Yung6ix and Naeto C on the cut, it’s not short of punch lines, catchy melodies and memorable lyrics that will stay locked up in your mind’s safe for days.

4. Ikechukwu Feat. Omo Akin – Ifeoma

When this song dropped earlier this year, i was completely infatuated. From the beats to the playful lyrics, “Ifeoma” was and still is my tune for days and with the “Ta Lo Sobe” crooner, Omo Akin adding his extra pizzazz, I’m still such a huge fan. I like the direction Ikechukwu is going with this his new album, can’t wait for it to drop.

3. Ajebutter 22 Feat. Taymi B – Senrenre

The first time I heard this track, I was driving. That night, I was driving back to the mainland on third mainland bridge and it was really late. Once I heard that Studio Magic beat, I felt like turning right back to go club somwhere in V.I because it set me in the mood for a fun night. Excellent song; I hope Ajebutter 22 can hit us up with some more hits like this.

2. Omawumi Feat. Flavour – Bottom Belle

“Kokoma, I stand by, Adebisi Konga, Omawumi’s baby Eh eh…” I’m pretty sure there are only a handful of people that didn’t get sucked into this catchy tune. I’m also pretty sure that a lot of people don’t even know what Omawumi or Flavour are even talking about on “Bottom Belle” but they love it anyway.

The song is actually Omawumi‘s and Flavour‘s angle/interpretation on/of a really Old Skool song, when bell-bottoms were the latest in fashion, where the crooner was asking for bell-bottoms as a sign of love.

1. M.I Feat. Funbi & Maytronomy – Beg For It

In my opinion, so far this year, “Beg For It” is my number one song out of Nigeria. (I had to specify “out of Nigeria” because Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know” just knows how to tug on our heart strings just the way we like it)

From the sampling in the production to the original angle the artists took to bring “Beg For It” to life; with Maytronomy‘s easily-relatable lyrics that are packed with witty punchlines, Funbi‘s breathtaking crooning and M.I‘s… you know, that thing M.I does; “Beg For It” just hits the spot for me as my number one Nigerian collaboration of the year.

* * * * *

So, now you know mine, I’m dying to know yours; I’d love to know what your tastes are – if there are any songs that should definitely be on that list that aren’t; what your own top 5 is, why and what you think BN Music Friday Top 5 is missing in general. I can’t wait to hear your feedback.

So, while I wait, here’s the special video I promised.

Check on it.

For more on Seye, {click here} or {here} or {here}.

So, with all that said, I’ll be right here waiting for you next week; and as I always say “vivere senza rimpianti” (to live without regrets). Have a great day.

BN Music presents “Introducing the Cool Kids”– Nigerian Music’s New School – Class of 2013

$
0
0

2012 was a big year for the Nigerian music industry. A lot of things took an unusual turn, for the better that is, as the industry grew even bigger, globalizing itself, so to speak. The industry’s heavy hitters signed international deals; more artists embarked on international tours and the music videos as well as online accessibility to our superstars became a lot better.

But that’s not all that happened in 2012. Last year, a ‘new’ breed of musicians emerged into the limelight – each a hybrid Nigerian, branded, creative, very individual and with their own unique sound. Not to say that any of them are ‘new’ artists, but 2012 marked their triumphant entry into celebrity; going from the ‘underground’ into household names.

In no particular order, allow me to introduce you to Nigerian Music’s ‘New School” – Class of 2013:

Burna Boy

Burna Boy

I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that Burna Boy is the first name on your lips when ‘New School’ is mentioned. Although the young star had been putting out music way before 2011, he won over Nigeria’s hearts with his braggadocio, his hits “Touch Your Toes”, “Tonight” and most notably, “Like To Party”.

For more on Burna Boy, {click here}

Twitter – @Burnaboy

Phyno

Phyno

No one has been able to put Igbo indigenous Rap on the map since the days of 2Shotz & Big Lo‘s “Delicious”; especially in this industry where absolutely everyone sings in Yoruba. Nonetheless, Phyno came through with his, you know, hair and stuck to his sound. The Igbo language has never been so cool.

Twitter – @Phynofino

Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade turned heads by force, with her bubbly and infectious Afro Pop tunes and her always on-point ‘Ghen Ghen’ style, getting the guys swooning so helplessly that the ladies had to watch their backs. She has certainly come a long way from “Fimisile” featuring eLDee, way back in 2010.

Twitter – @YemiAladee

DRB Lasgidi

drb lasgidi

DRB Lasgidi‘s sound is as much a juxtaposition of Western & Nigerian culture as their dress sense. Mixing up danshikis, rough facial hair, grunge vests & tees, wide-brim hats, skinny jeans, bandannas and round glasses, the “Toyin” crooners – Boj, TeeZee & Fresh L are “Afro Hipsters”. One thing’s for sure – they are not afraid of mashing anything up, from colours and patterns, to beats and genres.

Twitter – @DRBLasgidi | @BojDRB | @FreshLDRB | @TeeZeeDRB

Ajebutter22

Ajebutter22

His bass vocals, ironic moniker and intelligent wordplay totally caught us off guard when “Senrenre” became a massive hit. He went on to clear all doubt with his even bigger hit “Omo Pastor”. Remember the group, Soyinka’s Afro from “Ko Easy” back in 2009? Well, he was part of it. {Click here if you want to see young Ajebutter22 with a mohawk}

Twitter – @Ajebutter22

Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay

Seyi Shay marked out her own lane in the Nigerian music industry extraordinarily well. From her eye-catching outfits and stellar performances, to starring roles in music videos and love letters, the “Loving Your Way” songstress’ hard work is certainly paying off. We can only wonder how she’s going to shock us next.

Twitter – @IamSeyiShay

Dammy Krane

Dammy Krane

Dammy Krane sounds like no other. And, with just “My Dear”, “Ligali” and his “Gangnam Style” cover, this ’21st Century Fuji’ singer has taken Nigeria by storm. With his feel-good vibe, Afrocentric style, endless energy and 2Face‘s Hypertek record deal on his back, Dammy is certainly a force to reckon with.

Twitter – @Dammy_Krane

LOS

L.O.S

Tomi Thomas, Bridge, Yung Killing and Briss have all been on a “Bad Guy P” long before the swagged out music video dropped. Hefty beats, great chemistry, witty punchlines, individuality, solid R&B crooning, cool slang and an addiction to high fashion are all elements that make the L.O.S formula complete.

Twitter – @Team_LOS | @YuNgKwtf_LOS | @TomiThomas_LOS | @BrisB_LOS | @BridgeLOS

BlackMagic

BlackMagic

The epitome of unique, Blackmagic‘s sound is unrivaled for its originality, though reminiscent only of Fela’s Afro beats. His singles “Confam” & “Repete” quickly made him a household name to avid music listeners. If you ever bump into a dark and mysterious man, deep in thought, wearing a shokoto, fedora and tee shirt, just let him know that “everything confam oh”

Twitter – @ejayblackmagic

Temi Dollface

Temi Dollface

This UK-raised Nigerian was a style star way before a lot of us heard her music. Her music effortlessly builds bridges across Soul, Jazz, Afro Hip-Hop and Afro beats into what she terms as ‘Drama Soul’. With her new single “Pata Pata” and its music video on the way, we’ve got our eyes locked on this one.

The Producers

Sarz

Sarz

“Music is my life support machine…I am empty without it”

Sarz has produced a good percentage of all the hit songs in the past few years, from Shank‘s “Ghetto” to Wizkid‘s “Dance For Me” all the way back to the late Dagrin‘s “Kondo”, just to name a few. Lest we forget his fire banger with Wizkid, “Samba (Beat of Life)”. His name on a production has almost become synonymous with ‘hit song’ and it’s great he is finally getting the deserved notice.

Twitter – @beatsbysarz

Studio Magic

Studio Magic

Every time I hear ‘I need that magic’, it’s like I’m at a traffic light that just turned green and if i don’t move, I’m going to get yelled at by fellow commuters. Studio Magic is a production collective made up of two very talented producers – Platinum Toxx & Headphones91

Headphones91, Producer/A&R

Headphones91, Producer/A&R

Platinum Toxx, Producer/DJ

Platinum Toxx, Producer/DJ

These two have produced a myriad of banging tunes with their creative production style that sounds like nothing else in the industry. They have produced jams for the likes of M.I, Dr. Sid, Ajebutter22, L. Marshall, Falz, DRB Lasgidi, X.O Senavoe and American Rap star, Joe Budden, just to name a few. Watch out for them; their tunes are lethal.

Leriq

LERIQ

If you have ever heard any song from the Aristokrat Records’ stable, then you know who produced it – Leriq. He is responsible for every hit song that Burna Boy has ever breathed on, most especially the tunes that have become massive hits of late.

His production style cannot be put in a box either from his experimentation with live instrumentation to funky electronic sounds. We do hope that we hear more collabos with him and non-Aristokrat Records acts soon because his last “Bigger Better Best” production was sure fire.

Twitter – @LeriQ_TLS

Chopstix

chopstix

The producer from the G.R.I.P Musik crew has had a field day since he started churning out his music. He’s responsible for hits like Yung L‘s “Red Rose”, Endia‘s “48”, Ice Prince‘s “Aboki”, “Truth”, “More” and even Victoria Kimani‘s “M’toto” to name a few. He’s really an embodiment of the ‘new skool’ sound.

Not only does he have a lot of big tunes, he’s the Nigerian producer whose production keeps getting freestyles and covers made on by artists, known and up-and-coming. And, with his strong affiliation with Ice Prince and the Choc City crew, he’s going to be around for a while.

Twitter – @DChopstix

Maleek Berry

Maleek Berry

Bring back the R&B vibe into the new Afro Pop scene, Maleek Berry has been able to rise to mainstream success so much so that he’s the premier producer on Wizkid‘s Star Boy Entertainment label. With hit songs produced for Davido, Wizkid and Wande Coal on his bill, this is one producer to watch out for.
